For Better or For Worse

For better or for worse, neo-noir has had a lasting impact on popular culture. The genre has influenced countless filmmakers and writers, and its themes and style have seeped into other genres as well. However, like any genre, neo-noir has its strengths and weaknesses.

One of the strengths of neo-noir is its ability to tackle complex themes and issues. The genre often explores the darker aspects of human nature, such as greed, corruption, and violence. It doesn't shy away from difficult subject matter, which can lead to thought-provoking and impactful stories. For example, films like "Chinatown" and "L.A. Confidential" explore themes of political corruption and abuse of power, shining a light on real-world issues. Another strength of neo-noir is its visual style. The genre is known for its use of shadows, contrasting light, and unique camera angles. The use of these techniques can create a moody and atmospheric world that draws the viewer in. Additionally, neo-noir often features urban settings and can be a powerful commentary on modern society. The film "Blade Runner" is a prime example of how neo-noir can explore the darker side of a futuristic, technological, cyber world.

However, neo-noir is not without its weaknesses. One of the criticisms of the genre is that it can be overly pessimistic and nihilistic. The characters often lack any redeeming qualities, and the stories can leave the viewer feeling hopeless. Additionally, some neo-noir films can be overly self-indulgent and focus too much on style over substance. This is what Angelica Jade Bastién was talking about in her article published to Vulture. She stated how modern day noir fails to address bigger issues because it is too busy trying to look “noir” rather than being “noir."

While this may be true for some modern day Noirs, the genre has expanded so much today, you can find elements of noir such a wide array of films, even superhero movies such as The Dark Knight (2008). Neo Noir is such an interesting and compelling genre that when it embodies the qualities of classic noir the right way, the viewer is transported into a new, surreal, and desolate landscape, where the protagonist goes through a self-related journey in where the viewer can relate in a multitude of ways, and if not, he / she can enjoy a new and refreshing story in a world full of the unknown. Films I feel embody this characteristic are Drive (2011) and The Place Beyond the Pines (2012) both are Ryan Gosling Films.

Neo-noir has left a lasting impact on popular culture. The genre's strengths, such as its ability to tackle complex themes and its unique visual style, have led to impactful stories and memorable films. However, its weaknesses, such as its pessimistic tone and tendency towards self-indulgence, can be off-putting to some viewers. Regardless, neo-noir remains an important genre that continues to influence filmmakers and writers today.
